Royal jelly acid, a unique component of royal jelly, is a long-chain fatty acid containing both carboxyl and hydroxyl groups. The carboxyl and hydroxyl groups of 10-hydroxy-2-decenoic acid are located at opposite ends of the molecule, giving the compound acidic and alkaline properties and the ability to form ions in water. It is often used as a food additive, boasting benefits such as enhanced immunity, antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties, and potent inhibitory effects on various cell types, including lymphoma and breast cancer. In radiation-resistant mouse studies, mice treated with royal jelly acid showed a significant reduction in cell carcinogenesis compared to standard controls.

Further studies have shown that 10-HDA can completely antagonize the inhibitory effects of cortisone on the clearance rate of charcoal particles in mice and the inhibitory effects of cyclophosphamide on delayed-type hypersensitivity reactions in mouse skin. It can also promote hemolysin formation in mice with cyclophosphamide-induced immune suppression, while having no significant effect on these immune functions in normal mice.

Beyond the immune system, experiments have also investigated the pharmacological effects of trans-10-Hydroxy-2-decenoic Acid in treating experimental hyperlipidemia in rats. A hyperlipidemia animal model was established by feeding a high-fat diet, and the preventive and therapeutic effects of the compound on these animals were determined. The results showed that the experimental compound significantly reduced triglyceride (TG), total cholesterol (TC), and β-lipoprotein levels in the blood of experimental hyperlipidemia rats, while increasing high-density lipoprotein (HDL) levels. This suggests that 10-hydroxy-2-decenoic acid has a beneficial therapeutic effect on hyperlipidemia and can be used as a functional factor in the treatment of hyperlipidemia.
