Latanoprost API powder is a prostaglandin. A common characteristic of prostaglandins is the presence of substituents on a cyclopentane ring. PGF2α prostaglandins and prostaglandin analogs typically have two hydroxyl groups configured cis relative to the cyclopentane ring, and two side chains configured trans, each with a double bond. PGF2α analogs can have varying numbers of double bonds on the side chains and different substituents along the side chains. Additionally, in some PGF2α analogs, the carboxylic acid group on the side chain can be esterified. Latanoprost, a PGF2α compound with a saturated side chain and an esterified carboxylic acid group, is clinically used to reduce excessive intraocular pressure in patients with open-angle glaucoma and hypertensive intraocular pressure.
